Hopefully, every single one of us has thought about backing up our data. The easy way to go about this is to go buy an external hard drive or backup to a server. For home computers, a server is usually not an option, so we tend to stick with an external hard drive. Here is a question to think about: what would happen if your backup failed? What would happen if your original data source failed? What would happen if both your data and your copy failed in an unfortunate accident?

I asked this question to myself and decided to do some research. Here’s what I found:

Mozy offers a solution for home users and their backup needs. MozyHome, as a program that backs up files over the Internet in 448 bit encryption. The best part is that each license is good for an unlimited amount of data! So you must be thinking this is a ridiculous price, but it gets better. Each license will only set you back $4.95 per month. For those of you on a strict budget, you might have to skip your morning Starbucks for just one day.

For more information, visit the MozyHome website.

It’s almost the year 2010, Windows 7 has been released, and it’s time to start the process of upgrading, at the very least to Windows Vista. The lack of support for XP and the new features in Windows 7 should be enough of an incentive to get moving and do the upgrade. Still not convinced? Here are some interesting facts:

If you are a student, you can snag a copy of Windows 7 through Win741 for only $29.99, through the beginning of January 2010. You must have a .edu email address to qualify. Home Premium and Professional are available in both 32 and 64 bit versions.

Keyboard shortcuts enable better windows management. Here is a list of all the keyboard shortcuts available at your fingertips with your Windows Key:

Win+Home: Clear all but the active window

Win+Space: All windows become transparent so you can see through to the desktop

Win+Up arrow: Maximize the active window

Win+Down arrow: Minimize the window/Restore the window if it’s maximized

Win+Left/Right arrows: Dock the window to each side of the monitor (If you’ve got dual monitors, adding Shift to the mix (e.g., Win+Shift+Right arrow) will move the window to the adjacent monitor.)

Win+T: Focus and scroll through items on the taskbar.

Win+P: Adjust presentation settings for your display

Win+(+/-): Zoom in/out

Shift+Click a taskbar item: Open a new instance of that application

XP support is non-existent, which means the updates designed to protect your XP operating system are eventually going to stop. As malware and viruses continue to evolve and adapt, an outdated computer will be a sitting duck for an attack

The functionality of Windows 7 is much more intuitive than that of its predecessors. Although the above are just a few reasons to upgrade, the best thing to do is to see for yourself. Check out some online videos or tours of Windows, or visit a local retailer and get your hands dirty.
